Daemons And Bugs And Orks, Oh My!

Written By: Andrew Lebedin

Greetings to all! This past weekend marked the second GUTI doubles event of the year, and the first that gets a blog post!
Saturday, April 26th saw both new, and returning faces, as we often tend to see at our doubles events.

24 teams made it out to play this weekend, including some GUTI staples, like the Tyskie Brothers (OV Overton and Scott Bewer), Meta Chasers (Frederick Schellenberg and Logan Antonation) and Dad Vibes (Ian Kozachuk and Ryan Kuchar).

Tyranids and Daemons were tied for most played faction this weekend, with five players each, Tyranids had representation across five teams, whereas Chaos Daemons only saw play in four, on account of Fred and Logan's tag team of daemon awesomeness which managed to secure them yet another victory. Orks had three players this weekend, which was a huge step up from our last event, and there was also the traditional smattering of imperial and chaos factions. The day started off strong with some really fun matchups in round one Kylee Plouffe and Ivan Burachynsky, both household names in GUTI, playing Sisters and Daemons respectively resulted in Kylee taking a narrow win with a final score of 46 to 39

Initially, I had planned to hang out behind the scenes this weekend, but an unfortunate drop saw me partnered up with Richard Hannah and his signature Grey Knights. I used this as an opportunity to field my Imperial Knights for the first time since Majestic Beasties IV, with my list consisting of a Knight Lancer with the Banner of Macharius Triumphant, and a Castellan with Mysterious guardian. Richard’s list consisted of a Tech Marine, a strike squad, a grandmaster dreadknight, and three regular dreadknights.

Round one saw Richard and I paired into a deadly Tyranid/Space Wolf combo, which saw us suffer an embarrassing loss 93-18. On the other side of things, both Kylee and Fred’s teams saw decisive victories. Kylee Plouffe and her Sisters partnered with Wilfred Beaulieu’s World eaters, which scored them a 93-19 victory, and Fred and Logan’s “tag team of daemon awesomeness” secured them a 93-24 victory.

As usual, our typical suspects started to pull ahead into round 2, with Logan and Fred managing to score another clean victory with 95 points, which just so happened to be into Kylee and Wilfred. The Emperor (or perhaps Khorne?) was unable to save them this time.
Lawrence Hill and Bri Green on the other hand, managed to bounce back in round 2, firmly securing a 100-12 victory into the “Chosen Juans” and their double Blood Angels.

Richard and I were paired into Colin Horsburgh and Ashton Dejoong (new friend!) who also happened to be playing double blood angels. An absolute slugfest that saw the Lancer destroy a sanguinor, and two dreadnoughts, and then subsequently exploded, bringing with it two squads of marines and knocking two of Richard’s Dreadknights to the brink of death. Despite the absolutely lethal matchup, Richard and I managed to secure more points and take home an 87-10 victory.Kylee and I paired together in round 3, which saw the Sisters of Battle turn the forces of the Adeptus Custodes into gold mist in record time. We both ended the tournament with a game of Magic the Gathering, satisfied with the results of our days.

Round 3 saw familiar faces at the top, with the Meta Chasers (Fred and Logan), Flame and Faith (Ryan Block and Brendan Chrustie), and Tyskie Brothers (Scott and OV) all securing their third wins of the event. To the surprise of very few, the Meta Chasers took home the event with an overall score of 263 battle points. Ryan and Brendan also took home our equally important sportsmanship award, which is always eagerly anticipated.

For the most part, the event had a great turnout, and good vibes as always, which is great leading into June, when we will be hosting the Goonhammer open. Stress levels are definitely high among the GUTI team leading into this huge event, but that doesn’t stop us from showing up and putting in our all every month.

Thanks for reading my brief summary of the April Double Icehammer Throwdown, and we hope to see you at our singles event in May!Thanks for reading what I hope to be the first of many Gaming Under The Ice blog posts!
